Universal Studios has dropped Robert Rodriguez's upcoming Barbarella remake. Rodriguez is now shopping the project around to other studios.
Many are wondering why Universal dropped the project and if it had to do with Rodriguez's decision to cast girlfriend Rose McGowan in the lead role.
According to an unnamed source for The New York Observer, "It's sort of embarrassing for everyone involved. ... No one thinks Rose can carry the movie, but Robert won't listen." The paper adds that producer Dino De Laurentiis "wants to back Robert and his vision. But Robert's vision is blurred by Rose." The studio reportedly wants a bigger name star such as Halle Berry or Jessica Alba.
Rodriguez claims that Universal bailed due to the quickly growing budget. He says Universal would make the movie for $60 million, but that the budget is now over $80 million and he needs the money due to all the special effects in the film.
